Danish Stoneware: Bing & Grøndahl, Lisa Enquist, Striking MCM Vase, 1960s
Bing & Grøndahl was a Danish
porcelain
manufacturer founded in 1853 by the sculptor Frederik Vilhelm Grøndahl and merchant brothers Meyer Hermann Bing and Jacob Herman Bing. The trademark backstamp for Bing & Grøndahl (B&G) porcelains is the three towers derived from the Coat of Arms of Copenhagen. In 1987 the company merged with its primary competitor, the Royal Porcelain Factory under the name royal Copenhagen. The factory was located on the corner of Vesterbrogade and Rahbek Allé in the Vesterbro area, at that time outside the city of Copenhagen, Denmark. Grøndahl initially began the company to produce biscuit porcelain figurines modeled on the neoclassical sculptures of Bertel Thorvaldsen. The company extended production to include elegant tableware and coffee sets. While
Bing & Grøndahl is best know for its dinnerware, figurines and Christmas plates, it also hosted a art stoneware studio, which operated from the early 20th century until the factory's closure. Many important artists received their training at B&G, including Nathalie Krebs and Gunnar Nylund who went on to establish the Saxbo workshop. Artists associated with
the
B&G stoneware studio included Cathinka Olsen, Valdemar Petersen, and Ebbe Sadolin.
Lisa Enquist (1914-1989) received her training at the prestigious Danish School of Arts and Crafts and came to B&G after a long career at Saxbo, first as a trainee, then a thrower, and finally a signing artist. She began her work at Saxbo in 1935 and stayed for several years, leaving as World War II approached. Beginning in 1948, she operated her own studio, before rejoining Saxbo in 1952. She again stayed for several years, becoming a signing artist during this period of creative ferment at Saxbo. At some point after leaving Saxbo, she took her talents to B&G. She is said to have returned to stoneware production at B&G during the period from 1965 to 1970.
Lisa Engqvist, who was married to H.H. Engqvist, taught at the Jutland Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1984 she received the Bindesbøll Medal.
This striking, tri-lobed vase is probably Lisa Enquist's most distinctive form from her years at B&G. It is part of a line of other pieces in distinctive earthy glazes produced in the late 1960s. This large piece carries a very nice example of this glaze in olive green, brown and golden tones.  This vase is very well marked with the stenciled B&G three towers shopmark, Denmark and Model Number (5819). It also carries the artist's distinctive incised LE monogram signature.  The dimensions of this bowl are approximately 8.75 inches high and 5 inches wide at its widest point at the top. This first quality piece is in excellent original condition, with no observed flaws. Please see the photos for further details on condition.
